Benefits:

  • Reduction of 114,000 tons CO2eq/year from 60,000 ton of waste.
  • Estimated CAPEX = 4 M EGP, OPEX = 17 M EGP for Annual cost savings = 1.48 M EGP, Payback = 2 years
  • Production of a nutrient-rich compost ideal for enhancing agricultural farming activities.

Social management systems
Polaris IP improved the social management system by creating a data management and documentation system for the grievances received by the park management.

Social infrastructure

With the support of GEIPP Egypt, a strategy to attract female workforce and skilled persons was developed at Polaris IP. The strategy tackled the following issues:

    1. Root cause analysis for gender imbalance at the industrial park.
    2. The need for skill development programmes.
    3. Communication with related stakeholders to facilitate access to programs.
    4. Designing a programme to attract female and skilled workers.

Improving the Monitoring and management system

In 2022, Polaris Industrial Park focused on monitoring economic indicators, job creation, and technical performance for internal management. However, environmental and critical risks, including climate change impacts, were not yet part of the monitoring framework.

By 2024, Polaris IP took a significant leap forward in sustainability by enhancing its monitoring and management system. A structured plan was introduced to track critical risks every six months, ensuring a proactive approach to potential challenges. With support from GEIPP Egypt, a comprehensive strategy was developed to assess and mitigate climate change risks while addressing past environmental challenges. This plan outlined key measures for climate adaptation and mitigation, culminating in a well-defined action plan for resilience.

Looking ahead, Polaris aims to establish an Environmental Management Unit dedicated to ensuring industrial compliance with national laws, regulations, and Eco-Industrial Park (EIP) benchmarks. This initiative underscores the park’s commitment to environmental responsibility and long-term sustainability.

Polaris Industrial Park has been assessed against the International Framework for Eco-Industrial Parks using the EIP Assessment Tool developed by UNIDO. This tool was used to update collected information and identify and prioritize EIP initiatives and interventions to enhance the park’s performance.

In 2020, the assessment found that Polaris Industrial Park complied with 45% of the International EIP Framework, with a potential improvement opportunity of 47%, aiming to reach 92% compliance.

By 2024, the final assessment revealed that Polaris Industrial Park had achieved 70% compliance with the EIP Framework. The GEIPP project played a key role in supporting the implementation of prioritized opportunities, leading to significant improvements in the park’s overall performance.
