About the Park

Located in Piura, Peru, the Piura Futura Industrial Park spans 100 hectares and began operations in 2016. To date, more than $80 million has been invested in urban infrastructure, while the companies established in the park have allocated over $100 million to their industrial facilities. Currently, the park hosts 26 operational companies and has 11 facilities under construction, generating over 2,000 formal jobs during peak seasons. Piura Futura stands out for its top-tier infrastructure and services, including electricity, potable water, industrial sewage, public lighting, and 24-hour perimeter security. Additionally, its strategic location next to the new road interchange connecting the Pan-American Highway with the Interoceanic Highway North, and its proximity to the Port of Paita, facilitates access to international markets.

Achievements

Here is the EIP score based on UNIDO’s
assessment

The black lines show the park’s achieved scores in 2024 for each Eco-Industrial Park aspect (Economic, Environmental, Social, and Park Management), while the green lines indicate the expected scores by 2028.

Wastewater reuse for forestry purposes

ZED Paita has implemented an innovative wastewater treatment system using oxidation lagoons, comprising aerobic, anaerobic, and maturation ponds that efficiently remove organic loads and microbial contaminants. In 2023, it reused 310.590 m³ of treated water, and in 2024, 146.809 m³, contributing to the preservation of local water resources. This system irrigates 10.830 trees across 65 hectares of green areas, promoting biodiversity and environmental sustainability within the industrial park. Additionally, it engages 34 companies within the park and 10 external companies, fostering industrial symbiosis and positioning ZED Paita as a leader in sustainable development.

Risk management for the EIP

The Piura Futura Industrial Park has implemented an advanced sewer system with an investment of approximately 400.000 USD, designed to prevent flooding and mitigate the effects of the El Niño phenomenon. This system includes high-capacity pumps, specialized pipelines, and an efficient drainage scheme that allows for the management of large volumes of water, such as the 10.000 m³ evacuated in a single day during the critical event of 2023. Before these improvements, rainfall would cause water accumulation, putting the park’s operational continuity at risk. Under normal conditions, the city of Piura receives annual rainfall not exceeding 200 mm. However, during El Niño events, rainfall can exceed 1.500 mm, causing severe flooding in the region. While the city of Piura faces significant disruptions due to limited urban drainage capacity, the industrial park has implemented preventive measures such as regular equipment maintenance, drainage cleaning, and reinforcement of the pumping system, ensuring operational continuity even in extreme weather scenarios. This infrastructure not only protects industrial operations but also contributes to the safety of surrounding communities, positioning Piura Futura as a benchmark in climate resilience and risk management.
