Orascom Industrial Park is located in Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone). Orascom is the first industrial park in the SCZone, with an area of 10 million m2. Being 40 kilometers south of the Suez Canal, located at the crossing of the Cairo-Sokhna and Suez-Hurghada highways. Orascom IP houses around 102 companies, 41 of them are currently in operation and 50% are SMEs. The tenants include large heavy energy intensive international companies from sectors such as cement plant, oil refinery, fertilizers, chemicals and petrochemicals. Orascom IP maintains the main infrastructures and utilities in the park such as roads, fencing, security, seawater desalination plant and ground water extraction plant for water supply, gas pipeline and electricity. Orascom IP is designed to be “self-sustainable” on its water supply.
The aim of establishing the integrated waste management center is to collect, sort, recycle and recover materials from the generated waste of Orascom industries. The center will produce and market value-added materials. A business plan for specific “green” infrastructure and services will be undertaken to justify planning and implementation in Orascom industrial park.
Orascom IP is committed to marketing the park and park concepts (EIP concept) to potential national and international investors. This was done while attending SIA conferences, GEIPP Egypt forum, national and international conferences and printing marketing materials to to market the EIP concepts.
The company “Renewable Technology Company for Recycling” recycles tires waste with a capacity (10,000 ton/year) using pyrolysis technology to produce fuel oil (40-45%), black carbon (30-35%) and steel wires (15-20%).
GEIPP Egypt facilitated the collection of waste tires generated in Orascom IP.
Results:
Improving the monitoring and risk management by establishing an Environmental and Energy Management Unit and developing a plan to react against climate change risks .
Orascom Industrial Park has been assessed against the International Framework for Eco-Industrial Parks using the EIP Assessment Tool developed by UNIDO. This tool was utilized to update collected information and identify and prioritize key EIP initiatives and interventions to enhance the park’s performance.
In 2020, Orascom IP stood out as the highest-performing industrial park in compliance with the International EIP Framework. The assessment found that Orascom met 55% of the framework’s requirements, with a 37% improvement opportunity to reach 92% of international benchmarks.
By 2024, Orascom IP had made remarkable progress, achieving 80% compliance with the EIP Framework. The GEIPP project played a crucial role in supporting the implementation of prioritized opportunities, significantly enhancing the park’s overall sustainability and performance.
