Ekandustria is a provincial government-owned industrial park, managed by the Mpumalanga Economic Growth Agency (MEGA). Located outside Bronkhorstspruit, 57 km east of Tshwane and 79 km northeast of OR Tambo International Airport, it is conveniently situated near the N4 Highway (Maputo Corridor), linking Mpumalanga Province via Witbank and Middelburg. Although the park is within Gauteng Province, it falls under Mpumalanga’s jurisdiction. The park is divided into two areas: Ekandustria North, managed by MEGA and the focus of eco-industrial park initiatives, and Ekandustria South. Ekandustria North spans 455 ha, including 363 ha of serviced land and 92 ha of vacant land. About 30% of the area is developed, with 104 factory buildings, 40% of which are currently rented out. There are 52 industrial companies operating in Ekandustria, with approximately 18 being SMMEs. Key industries include textile dyeing, CMT, shoe production, pet food production, polystyrene manufacturing, construction materials, automotive repair, pallet recycling, refractory and ceramics, mining explosion materials, plastic recycling, and retail businesses.
The rehabilitation and licensing of the Ekandustria landfill site has started with an environmental scoping exercise, which will be followed by a full-scale environmental impact assessment (EIA).
Upgrading and refurbishing the existing wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) located in Ekandustria has started. This will improve the efficiency of processing industrial effluents. This process will involve undertaking an environmental scoping exercise, which will be followed by a full-scale environmental impact assessment (EIA).
The erection of a security fence with surveillance cameras around the Park to ensure the safety of tenants and infrastructure has started. This will address and track all reported security and safety incidents within the park Refurbishing the Park’s office buildings and making enough space available for leasing to new tenants and improving revenue generation has started.
Ekandustria Industrial Park’s baseline performance was 50% in 2020. However, the park has faced multiple challenges that have hindered progress in improving its score. Despite this, Ekandustria has significant potential for improvement in park management, environmental, and social performance. There is strong potential for economic growth in 2024-2025, driven by identified improvement opportunities currently being implemented by the park’s management entity, the Mpumalanga Economic Growth Agency (MEGA).
